About the Food for Life program
Food for Life is an award-winning program that teaches nutrition education and cooking skills to reduce diet-related chronic diseases. Designed by physicians, nurses, and dietitians, Food for Life classes promote healthful eating based on the latest scientific research. Since 2001, Food for Life has been a pioneer in advancing healthier living and better health outcomes in communities around the world.
Food for Life can help you, your community, your employees, and/or your patients reduce the risk for a variety of chronic diseases. More than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and more than 30 million people are estimated to be living with diabetes in the United States alone. There is an urgent need for a new direction in addressing diseases and disease treatment, and Food for Life provides a practical and groundbreaking approach.
Food for Life classes include:
• The science behind how foods and nutrients work to promote or discourage disease.
• Hands-on cooking demonstrations and sampling of delicious, healthful recipes that can be easily made at home
• Practical cooking skills and tips for making healthy habits a part of daily life
• A supportive and motivational atmosphere to help you take charge of your health
About the Physicians Committee
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a nonprofit organization that is working to dramatically change the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. By prioritizing prevention over pills, doctors are empowering patients to take control of their own health. The Physicians Committee is also building a new way of viewing research. Since 1985, the Physicians Committee has worked tirelessly for alternatives to the use of animals in medical education and research and for more effective scientific methods.
The organization combines the clout and expertise of more than 17,000 physicians with the dedicated actions of more than 175,000 members across the United States and around the world. The Physicians Committee’s staff of physicians, dietitians, and scientists is working with policymakers, industry, the medical community, the media, and the public to create a better future for people and animals.
About Alecia Sudmeyer
Alecia was a reluctant cook until she discovered the transformative power of a whole foods, plant-based diet. Today, as a Food for Life Instructor and nutrition educator, she is passionate about helping others take control of their health while enjoying delicious, easy-to-make meals.
Initially drawn to a WFPB lifestyle to manage weight during menopause, Alecia quickly realized its potential to prevent and even reverse chronic diseases. Inspired by her own progress, she began eliminating other addictive substances from her life—including alcohol, processed sugar, coffee, and oil.
Her commitment deepened after her partner underwent a six-way heart bypass surgery in his 50s. Although doctors warned he’d likely need another procedure within a decade, Alecia dove into research and discovered how food could reverse what had been labeled “hereditary heart disease.” Together, they adopted a 100% whole food, plant-based lifestyle and within just one year her partner not only avoided further surgery, but completely reversed his heart disease.
Alecia serves cities and surrounding areas of Bangor, Portland, Augusta, and Belfast, Maine and other areas around Maine upon request. She also serves Lisbon and Oporto, Portugal and other areas around Portugal. Classes are taught in English or Portuguese.
